The Relationship Between RISC-V and ARM

Oct 29, 2026

When discussing RISC-V, comparisons with ARM are inevitable. But it should be made clear first: RISC-V is not intended to “replace” ARM; rather, it offers a different technological path.

ARM’s strength lies in maturity. After three decades of accumulation, its cores, toolchains, operating systems, and talent pool are highly developed, making it the de facto standard in the embedded field. The trade-off is licensing fees, royalties, and limited room for architectural modification.

For automakers and Tier 1 suppliers, choosing RISC-V involves an additional consideration: supply chain security. The chip shortage lessons of recent years have made everyone aware that architectural dependence also entails risk.A technology foundation not controlled by a single vendor can make product planning and capacity arrangements more flexible.

In the automotive-grade field, what RISC-V needs to catch up on is ecosystem and certification; what ARM faces is cost and flexibility. For a long time to come, the two paths are likely to coexist. But in the race for high safety and independent controllability, RISC-V has already stepped on the accelerator.
